Discussion Questions:
- Which of the listed temptations (greed, gossip, anger, lust, overconsumption) do you think is most commonly minimized or justified in today’s culture? Why do you think that is?
- Pastor Sean pointed out that temptation is “anything that promises satisfaction at the cost of your obedience to God.” How have you seen this in your own life or someone else’s? What was the cost?
- Read James 1:14-15. Temptation starts with desires, but those desires can quickly get out of hand. What practical steps can adults take to recognize the subtle enticements that lead to destructive behaviors?
- Four strategies were named to overcome temptation (Go to War, Remember the Cost, Arm Yourself with God's Word, Lock Arms with God’s People). Which of these do you most easily gravitate toward? Which is the most difficult for you to live out? Why?
- “The enemy isn’t playing games, and if you are, you’re toast.” Read 1 Peter 5:8. What temptation is most dangerous in your life right now? How can you beef up your defense and not allow the enemy to devour you through that temptation?
- Jesus understands our temptation and never submitted to sinful behavior (Hebrews 4:15). How does knowing He gets you — and doesn’t shame you — change the way you approach Him when you’re struggling?
