Discussion Questions:

  1. Sunday’s sermon addressed a topic that isn’t frequently addressed in church: abuse. What stood out to you most in Pastor Sean’s message and why?

  2. Choose at least three of the following verses to read aloud and reflect on
Jesus’s experiences: Luke 4:29, Luke 22:48, Luke 23:33, Mark 3:21, Mark 5:40, Matthew 22:15, Matthew 26:67, John 19:1-2. How does knowing that Jesus experienced abuse affect your view of Him?

  3. How can emotional or spiritual abuse be just as harmful as physical abuse? Why do you think these forms are often overlooked?

  4. The sermon mentioned that “healing happens when you bring your pain into the light.” What are some factors that could make it difficult for someone to do that? Read Galatians 6:2 aloud. How, as believers, could we be “safe people” for someone experiencing abuse to confide in?

  5. What are some misconceptions people might have about forgiveness, especially after abuse or deep hurt?

  6. Read Romans 12:19. How does this verse guide individuals in handling the desire for revenge? What does it look like to trust God with justice, especially when forgiveness feels impossible or unfair?

  7. What would Acadiana look like if we all practiced forgiveness 100% of the time in our personal relationships?

  8. The Bible tells us Jesus still had scars after the resurrection. How might that image encourage someone who is healing from abuse or trauma? What does it say about God’s ability to redeem pain?
