Sanctification Foundations - Week 3 November 3, 2024 Long obedience in the same direction. - Eugene Peterson. “I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 (CSB) “For this is God’s will, your sanctification … ” 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (CSB) “12Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to His good purpose.” Philippians 2:12-13 (CSB) “6So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him, 7being rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.” Colossians 2:6-7 (CSB) We never graduate from the gospel. We go deeper into it. Sanctification is us being conformed into the image of Christ. 1. Starts with Surrender “Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.’” Luke 9:23 (CSB) Sanctification is our everyday “yes” to Jesus. 2. Powered by the Spirit “4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5He saved us —not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy — through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:4-5 (CSB) 3. Rooted in Scripture “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17 (CSB) “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 (CSB) God’s Word is our guide and growth plan. 4. Deepened in Solitude “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place; and there He was praying.” Mark 1:35 (CSB) 5. Encouraged by the Saints “24And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 (CSB) 6. Sent on Mission “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10 (CSB) Sanctification isn’t just who we’re becoming but where we’re going. “18Jesus came and told His disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT)
